Shadowfoot moves quickly along the border, moving just slow enough for Wrenpaw and Ripplepaw to keep up. Stopping as soon as she catches a trace of prey scent, she turns to the young cats and sits down.
"What do you smell?" she asks, flicking her tail upwards.

Wrenpaw sniffed the air, then the ground, having a bit of trouble picking out the individual scents. Not sure what type of prey the scent belonged to, she quickly glanced at Ripplepaw, who grinned. 'Prey scent, there's a mouse a couple of fox lengths away, a starling in the trees over there, and a frog a few fox lengths that way closer to river bank. There's MistClan's scent on the other side of the river too, but it's not that fresh, maybe a couple of days old?' he answered.

Shadowfoot smiles proudly at Ripplepaw.
"Excellent! You have it all right, though I'd say the MistClan scent is a little more recent--likely from a border patrol yesterday."
Standing back up, she nods at Wrenpaw.
"Why don't you take a shot at that mouse?"

Feeling more confident now that Ripplepaw had told her where the mouse was she dropped down and spread her weight out evenly. slowly secret towards the mouse, then when she was close enough she pounced, grappling the mouse between her paws. She struggled to keep it still to give it a killing bite, and it let out a shriek before she managed to kill it. She muttered quick thanks to StarClan for the prey, then carried it back to Shadowfoot. 'Sorry,' she mewed.

Shadowfoot flicks her tail, shrugging.
"It's all right, we can find more elsewhere. Next time, don't fumble around with it so much. Killing it quickly means it suffers less pain, and doesn't alert the surrounding prey."
Turning, the scrawny black she-cat continues along the border, motioning for the two apprentices to follow.

Wrenpaw nodded, then quickly followed after Shadowfoot, Ripplepaw close behind.

Shadowfoot leads the apprentices along the rest of the border uneventfully, catching a water vole at the river's edge.
Preparing to head back to camp, she pauses and looks down at the young cats.
"Are you two up for more hunting, or would you prefer to go home right away?"

Wrenpaw was tempted by the thought of going straight back to camp to sleep, but remembering the sad excuse of a fresh kill pile that was in the camp knew she should hunt. She glanced at Ripplepaw, who, seeming to have read her mind, sniffed the air for prey scent. 'There's a shrew not far from here, some mice further in the forest. It'd be good to take something back for the clan.' he said.
Wrenpawquickly got into her best attempt at a hunter's crouch and started trying to track down the shrew.

Shadowfoot smiles proudly at her apprentices, glad to see them thinking for the clan. She opened her mouth to say something, but closed it when she noticed Wrenpaw getting into a hunting crouch, not wanting to scare away the apprentice's prey.
Instead, she crouches down beside the apprentice and uses her tail to make corrections to her stance. When she's satisfied, she sits back to watch.

Wrenpaw carefully takes note of the corrections Shadowfoot made to her stance, then began creeping forward again, finally found the shrew's scent, and as soon as she saw it still stayed frozen still for a bit, watching it and thinking through her attack. Then she pounced, managing to give it a killing bite the moment her claws touched it. She whispered thanks to starclan for the prey, the returned to Shadowfoot.

Shadowfoot, sitting downwind from Wrenpaw and the shrew with her tail neatly wrapped around her paws, smiles and nods approvingly.
"Well done. Quite the improvement."
Getting to her feet, she pads back over to Ripplepaw.
"Why don't we split up for a bit, and hunt on our own? You two can stay together, and head towards the trees. I'll stay by the river. Call for me if you run into trouble."
She leans down and murmurs in Ripplepaw's ear, "Watch out for her. Correct her if need be. You're in charge."

Ripplepaw nodded, then grinned at Wrenpaw and the two happily started wondering into the trees, Ripplepaw leading and scenting the air, pinpointing exactly where the mice were with ease.
(I'm gonna move this to the territory, cos we're straying a bit away from the border)
